I had just gotten home from work on Thursday and carrying on with my usual routine of laying on the couch catching up on the the things I had missed on social media while I was away at work and I spotted the caption ‘Raf Simons steps down at Dior’ on Harpers Bazaar Us’ Instagram page and that made me wince, I couldn’t believe it as he had just shown S/S 2016 in Paris 2 weeks ago without any sign or rumours of him leaving the brand. The only other time I had felt that way about a creative designer stepping down from a fashion brand was when Frida Giannini left Gucci and I still haven’t gotten over that as I felt just like Miuccia Prada she was a powerful role model for women in fashion.
A million thoughts ran through my mind as I scoured the major fashion websites looking to find the reason why he had left Dior, I immediately texted my sister (Hey Jade!) who is equally a fanatic of Raf Simon’s work at Dior and she asked what I had been thinking ‘ Omg I’m in shock is he leaving for another fashion house?’.
The only other fashion houses I could think of him leaving to were Chanel, Givenchy or Valentino however, I couldn’t imagine Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci,Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli stepping down from their creative roles at those houses.
A couple of hours later, more news had filtered the internet with Raf Simons statement quoting ‘It is a decision based entirely and equally on my desire to focus on other interests in my life, including my own brand, and the passions that drive me outside my work’ , after pondering on this statement it is quite understandable because designing six collections a year Fall couture, Spring couture, Autumn/Winter ready to wear, Spring/Summer ready to wear, Pre-fall ready to wear and the Cruise collection could be a bit overwhelming for a sole Designer.
I remember watching him earlier in the year in Frédéric Tcheng’s fashion documentary Dior and I that focused on his first collection which was the Fall couture 2012 for the fashion house 3 years ago and it was interesting to see his work ethic and all the emotions he went through in producing the collection in just 8 weeks!. Raf Simons did an amazing job with creating a balance between Christian Dior’s original designs and Raf Simons modern aesthetic for the fashion house. His fusion of art and futuristic designs attracted a new demographic group to the brand and this is evident by the street style stars at fashion week and young fashionistas who now wear the brand. Hopefully we would see more of Raf Simons in the near future, it would be great to see more of his outstanding designs on womenswear as he did at Jil Sander and most recently Dior. My question now is who would replace Raf Simons at Dior? Hopefully someone who can continue to steer the brand in the path Raf Simons created
